Class Details
This 2-hour workshop is designed for beginners who have always wanted to try belly dance and the veil but haven't managed to fit it in the weekly schedule or maybe didn't want to commit until trying it first. Date: Saturday September 12 Time: 1:00 pm - 3:00pm Location: DanceCo. Ltd, 9030 McKenney Ave, St. Albert, T8N 2T7 in Studio 1/2 What to expect during this 2-hour workshop? You will learn key belly dance moves and technique to match the beat and rhythm of songs drum but you will also learn how to dance with a veil, a belly dance prop provided by Belly Dance Beats. The song "Bahlem Bi Shahrzad" lends itself well to both styles of belly dance - the graceful flowing movements of the veil and the syncopated isolations of a drum solo. Experience Level: No experience required. All are welcome to join, ages 8 - 99, which makes it a perfect opportunity for youth and parents, siblings, aunties and grandparents to try belly dance together. If you love it, you can register for one of my 8-week courses (pending availability) which start on Sun. Sept. 27. Is it hard on the body? Belly dance is a low-impact dance form and only becomes challenging on the body at intermediate/advanced levels, so you don't need to worry about that. It is always important to work with the limitations of your own body, however that being said, belly dance is achievable for bodies of all shapes and sizes. It is move forgiving, adaptable and inclusive than traditional types of dance tend to be. What do you wear to the workshop? Wear comfortable exercise clothes. You do not need to show your belly. Traditionally belly dance is done barefoot but you can wear socks, a ballet slipper or soft jazz shoes if you prefer. Do you need a hip scarf? They are encouraged, but not mandatory. They are fun, colourful, shimmery and jingle. They also help you visually see and hear your movements. Various types of hip scarves are available via my online store. I will bring your purchase to the workshop or you can buy one in person before the workshop. Arrive 15-minutes early to browse hip scarves. Prices are $10+.
